A VISIT WITH GEORGE ALLAN AND HIS PAINTINGS
My journey up Haleakala Highway to George and Janet Allan's welcoming home and gardens was, as always, long and winding. Well worth the steep climb, and, looking forward to some friendly art banter in George's studio, I drove up and up until the familiar yellow mailbox came into view. And there was George, painting in his spacious studio, and Janet, greeting me warmly and serving tea and cookies.

Around us hung many works intended for Ku'u Home Maui. Larger paintings included Tight End, a view of the koi pond in the Allan's garden; Kula Sunset, the signature painting of a sunset from the house; Leho'ula Footprints, the pristine Hana beach recently purchased by Oprah Winfrey; and a painting of white ginger growing in Janet's garden.

Included were a collection of island subjects (below), all 6" x 6", painted in oil on panel, 16 in all, about to be meticulously framed. Images included some florals, small landscapes such as Kapalua views, a sunset, the koi pond; well, just about anything that caught George's eye.

Referring to his newest book Life is a Performance, just published by Tim Hill and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center as a benefit for The Center, George explained that he rephotographed all of his paintings at the Castle Theater with his digital camera and burned them on discs after manipulating them in Photoshop, and sent them off to the printer in Hong Kong. The artist remarked that he was extremely happy with how the book turned out and that "the colors are just right" even though there is much variety in the hundred subjects. He had recently donated the last 12 of the 100 paintings to The Center.

Ku'u Home Maui celebrates the beginning of George's 30th year as an artist on Maui and his 10th solo exhibit at Viewpoints Gallery.
