"Listening to Plants" is sort of an extension of gathering practices in that it adds a whole other level to herbal medicine. It seems to be somewhat universal among indigenous practitioners. This full day hands-on workshop will start at Viewpoints Gallery and continue on site, weather permitting, at Kepaniwai Park, 'Iao Valley.

ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE

Fridays
February & March, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Joseph Fletcher

Joseph Fletcher will demonstrate oil painting.

Off in a field, or by the side of the road, sometimes on top of a hill, or sandwiched between parked cars, you’ll see him.  In town, or trudging through thick and thicket, negotiating barbed wire fences and barking dogs, you’ll see him, but don’t stop him.  Joseph Fletcher is on a mission.

As a plein air artist, Fletcher is firmly committed to enduring the whim of the weather and the lay of the land to create his inspired oil paintings.

Portraying the simple aspects of the world in which we live, Fletcher’s artwork honors the moment and dedicates the craft to recording the living history of Maui in a strong and vibrant manner.  His assured strokes and textured approach bring life and energy to the paintings he creates: These are visions of the real Maui, hidden right in front of us.

Saturday
February 14, 2009, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Connie Adams

Connie Adams will be demonstrating paper-crafted Valentine pop-up cards.

Tuesday
February 17, 2009, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Fiama von Schuetze

Fiama von Schuetze will be demonstrating fiber art.

Growing up on Maui since I was a small child, my life has been surrounded by natural beauty and inspiration. My love of nature and hiking adds to the joy of collecting the many fibers I use in my artwork. With the help and support of my growing family, I found a lifestyle where work and play are one. Weaving has become a form of meditation, a way to quiet my mind.
I enjoy working with natural fibers, knowing the earth will receive them as gently as they were put forth.

Saturday
February 21, 2009, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Dianna Grundhauser

Dianna Grundhauser will show how she transforms images into colorful art quilts.

She is an award-winning quilt artist who lives in Makawao with her husband, Bruce.  Always surrounded by women who sewed as she grew up, Dianna’s interest in quilting began at 18 when her mom gave her a quilt her grandmother had made.  A class at a local quilt shop ignited what was to become a consuming passion for fabric, thread and quilts.  Over the years her “quilting life” has taken her from student, quilt shop owner and teacher, to quilt artist.  Dianna is continually inspired by the natural beauty of her island home and strives to reflect the spirit of Hawai'i in her work.

Tuesday
February 24, 2006, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Michael Clements

Michael Clements will demonstrate pastel painting.

He has been painting with pastels along roadsides and streets, harbors and beaches, pastures and flower farms on Maui for the past few years.  His work has been the recipient of several awards.  A devoted daily painter, he has developed a sort of obsession with painting outdoors.  Neither wind nor rain or household chores can keep him from pursuing this passion.

"Being an artist to me is learning how to see. To see light and color in its constantly changing states is high drama that gets my heart pounding from the thought that I just might be able to “catch” it if I can just get set up quickly enough."

Saturdays
February 28 and March 28, 2009, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Grace Murata

Lei demonstrations by Grace Murata.

E ia kou lei nani - "Here is your beautiful lei" is a phrase beginning many chants and songs of Hawai’i. In hula, such a phrase may be interpreted in many ways and all point to love, "aloha".

Wednesday
March 4, 2009, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Chelsea Fahsholtz

Chelsea Fahsholtz, pastel painting demonstration.

She describes familiar landscapes from new perspectives and at different times of day - particularly dawn and twilight. Wet roads at dawn and sunset are incredibly expressive and have a sentimental appeal. Chelsea tries to capture scenes in a way that allows a viewer to understand and feel what a moment in that place was like. She also likes calling attention to subjects that viewers might not have noticed or cared about. She would like to identify new icons of Upcountry Maui - those places, atmospheric occurrences, scenes - that are familiar and hold meaning to the people who live in and visit this place.

Saturday
March 7, 2009, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Pohaku Kaho'ohanohano

Lauhala weaving demonstration by Pohaku Kaho'ohanohano

That Pohaku Kaho'ohanohano was dreaming about weaving a hat wasn't that strange. He'd been studying the art of lau hala weaving for a while, having taken it up after learning that his two great-grandmothers had been accomplished at the craft.

These days, Kaho'ohanohano makes hats with and without molds. He's a master weaver and a kumu himself and teaches at senior centers and in local schools. He passes on what he's learned from his teachers — seven in total — on Maui and Hawai'i Island. His training was somewhat unusual: The craft is typically passed down in a family, but Kaho'ohanohano's great-grandmothers died before he was able to learn from them.

Still, lauhala was in his blood. "I just kind of took to it," he says. "I was enthralled. And I'm still learning."

Tuesday
March 10, 2009, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Joelle C

Joelle C., oil and acrylic on carved wood demonstration.

She has developed a technique over the years that is uniquely her own: she begins by hand-carving the image on mahogany wood panels, and then paints with mixed mediums; developing one of the most compelling techniques to emerge in recent years.  The result is artwork of extraordinary beauty, appeal, and distinction.

Tuesday
March 24, 2009, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Tim Garcia

Demonstration by Tim Garcia, sculptor

Tim Garcia's free flowing sculptures dramatically depict universal forces of nature in modern compositions. He delicately connects nature with the political state of the world in portraying a peaceful balance between shape, texture, light, and form.  Embracing abstract elegance and exotic beauty, Garcia’s work illustrates creative insight;  encompassing the free spirit of ancient and modern expressionists while bringing the viewer closer to connect with the elements.

Tim’s work is inspired while he works in his outdoor sculpture garden in Maui's Hai'ku rainforest, where he immerses himself in nature and defines his work in sculpture.
