Selected Pieces
THE GREAT MAKAWAO PAINT OUT
April 29th through May 12th, 2004

If your travels have taken you through Makawao lately, chances are you've encountered an artist or two, working with easel and palette beside the road. If it's April Upcountry, it can only mean one thing: The Great Makawao Paint-Out. Every April, Viewpoints Gallery invites plein-air artists to capture the town of Makawao and the surrounding countryside on watercolor paper or canvas. Works completed during the Paint-Out were submitted for this exhibition. Maui artist George Allan was juror for the 2004 Makawao Paint-Out. He selected 40 pieces by 29 artists from 59 works submitted for for this exhibit. The four pieces singled out for special merit are shown here. Please visit the gallery to see all 40 pieces selected for this show.

Juror’s Statement

I’m honored to be asked to jury The Great Makawao Paint-Out 2004. Ideally, in the process of jurying, the juror has no prior knowledge of the artists or their work, so a more pure aesthetic can be brought to the process. But on a small island, this is seldom practical. So my first consideration is to try not to favor people I know personally and appreciate, trying hard to remain unbiased.

I believe juried shows are, above all else, for artists to learn where their art stands academically at this time, as opposed to presentation for a commercial gallery. Whether art sells or not is definitely not the best way to assess its value as good art. I believe that one should enter many juried shows over time, with input from many jurors, in order to properly assess where one stands.

One of the things I definitely don’t do when I jury a show is to choose a “beautiful show,” which takes the creative process out of the hands of the artists, but strokes the ego of the juror.

I’ll be paying attention to originality of concept, creativity, technique, professionalism, and presentation; and will be viewing the work mostly to assess if the artists have truly looked at their subject with their eyes or, in the case of abstraction, with their intellect, and how successful they are at making me feel what they felt at the time of observation or conceptualization. I believe that even raw beginners can achieve this status, and while their work might not be so professional, it can rate high in my estimation.

- George Allan
