Viewpoints artist Julie Schoenecker is sharing 30 years of her printmaking art, uniting the past with unique new works in this show. Julie preceded the opening reception on Saturday, August 25th with an introductory walk-through. Julie also did printmaking demonstrations at the gallery on Tuesdays and Fridays during the show

The show includes intaglio etchings, monoprints, woodcuts and watercolor monotypes, about 45 original prints. There are also be some hand-made books... An example, Ribbons and Rhythms suspends a group of color monotypes, sewn onto ribbons hung from bamboo as a contemporary oriental scroll.

For this show, Julie is looking both backward and forward. Looking back, she is completing the edition of Thirteen using the plate she made from her drawing of her daughter when she was thirteen. Her new works include images on paper she makes from the same plant that is the source of the image... A bird of paradise print is on paper of bird of paradise stems and a hibiscus image is on paper of hibiscus stems. As a printmaker, Julie says "One has to love the process and not be in a hurry for the result. I try to strike a balance between organization. and spontaneity and to respond to what its evolving. I play with images, I play with ideas, I play with color. Ideas come first."

Julie taught printmaking at the Art Lab at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, prior to coming to Maui. After moving to Maui in 1986, she founded the printmaking department at the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center. Her teaching now is limited to teaching teachers.
